My baby is not even 1 yr. old and I'm pregnant again. I don't want kids so close together. So the doctor said: 'Ok and what do you want me to do?' She said: 'I want you to end my pregnancy, and I'm counting on your help with this.'The doctor thought for a little, and after some silence he said to the lady:

'I think I have a better solution for your problem. It's less dangerous for you too.' She smiled, thinking that the doctor was going to accept her request. Then he continued: 'You see, in order for you not to have to take care of 2 babies at the same time, let's kill the one in your arms. This way, you could rest some before the other one is born. If we're going to kill one of them, it doesn't matter which one it is.

There would be no risk for your body if you chose the one in your arms.

The lady was horrified and said: 'No doctor! How terrible! It's a crime to kill a child! 'I agree', the doctor replied. 'But you seemed to be OK with it, so I thought maybe that was the best solution'. The doctor smiled, realizing that he had made his point.

He convinced the mom that there is no difference in killing a child that's already been born and one that's still in the womb. Notable has been the stand by the Church on the provisions regarding abortion and the Kadhis courts. I have been following keenly the discussions and are now convinced, more than ever before that the country needs to listen to the concerns being raised by the clerics.

On the abortion debate, the current provisions are disastrous, to say the least. As a country that presents itself to respect the sanctity of life, we must be clear on safeguarding life, whether born or awaiting birth. The provisions in the current draft in Parliament indicate that abortion can be procured following advice by a trained health professional. The question that the Committee of Experts should respond to is: Who is a trained health professional? With this provision, it is apparent that a laboratory technician, a nurse, a morgue attendant and even a public health worker can actually approve the abortion of a fetus. Now, this is dangerous. We must not deliberately start off the process of mass murder of the unborn in the pretext of saving the lives of pregnant mothers. We must be very clear when allowing for the termination of pregnancies so as to ensure that utmost professional input would have been sought before giving a go ahead for the termination of any pregnancy.

On the Kadhis courts, there has been misinformation that the church is against the Kadhis courts. That is far from the truth. The church actually has no objection with having Kadhis in Kenya. The bone of contention lies with the position that a Kadhi has been given as a government official and whose roles are entrenched in the constitution. Kadhis should exist solely for religious obligations, funded by the respective religion’s faithfuls. But what is wrong with having the Kadhis Courts in the constitution since they have been there since independence and have not hurt any Christian? This has been the question some persons are asking. The fact that the provision has been there does not mean it has been acceptable. A case is still stuck in court since 2004 contesting the same.

What remains a real suspicious issue is the removal of certain clauses that indicate that all religions shall be treated equally and that all religions will be treated equally. Just why was this clause removed if the CoE and PSC do not have ulterior motives? Why have Muslims for instance been excluded from certain clauses touching on the Bill of Rights? Why has the CoE and the PSC expanded the mandate of the Kadhis from the original coastal strip to be a national mandate? As articulated by the NCCK, the Christian community must stand and seek for clear explanation from Parliament on these issues. In case the issues are ignored, we should then shoot down the draft at the referendum, with no apologies.

Kadhi Courts in Kenya's Constitution?

Be the Change you Want

Constitution Must Treat All Religions Equally
A Commentary by Pete Ondeng and Peter Waiyaki

The public discourse on whether or not the Kadhi Courts should be included in the constitution has been wrongly interpreted by many to be a Christian vs Muslim affair. The often uninformed rhetoric by hard liners on both sides of the argument adds an unnecessary and potentially explosive element to the already charged political atmosphere.

The issue here is not about religion, but about the constitution. The move to change the current constitution springs from an acknowledgement by most people that there are wrongs in the document that need to be made right. There are some basic rights, for instance, that the original constitution did not address, and which need to be enshrined in the new document. Similarly, there were some provisions that were included by those who negotiated the Lancaster House document that no longer hold water and need to be scrapped.

The Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) retreat in Naivasha, which was expected by many to degenerate into an ODM vs PNU muscle-flexing contest, pleasantly surprised the nation by reaching consensus on almost all of the so-called contentious issues.

In regard to the Kadhi Courts, however, the PSC missed the point and actually went astray. Curiously, the draft constitution that emerged from that retreat omitted a simple but critical phrase that had appeared in all the many draft constitutions that have been produced since the first one in 2002. All previous versions of the Draft Constitution have consistently stated categorically that “State and religion will be separate, there will be no state religion and that all religions will be treated equally. These provisions have now been removed, leaving only that "There Will Be No State Religion". Most people are not aware that this small but significant change was made in Naivasha.

Why was this phrase removed, and what would be the significance of its absence in the constitution? The only logical conclusion would be that the new constitution does not acknowledge all religions as equal.

The Constitution enunciates equality for all citizens. Further it provides that nobody shall be discriminated against by reason of their religion, among other things. Unfortunately, the Kadhi courts are themselves an institutionalization of inequality. They seek to favour one religion
over others by creating and protecting and providing for state funding of a purely religious system of dispute resolution.

One of the central arguments from those who advocate for Kadhi courts to be included in the constitution is that the courts have been in the constitution since independence. This is very true. The courts did not accidentally end up in the constitution but were a part of the negotiations
between Jomo Kenyatta and the Sultan of Zanzibar which led to the 10 mile coastal strip being incorporated into the Republic of Kenya at independence.

However, these historical reasons and context no longer apply. What was then a concession to a small part of the country and a very small part of the population has now become a demand and a right applicable to the whole country.

Excluding the Kadhi courts from the new constitution would not in any way hinder the rights of Muslims to worship Allah or to establish courts and other mechanism of dispute resolution. The role of the Kadhi as a religious office will remain intact, organized and funded by the Muslim community, in the same way as other religions will be required to fund their own activities.

The only effect of not including the courts in the constitution would be that, like for all other religions, there would be no funding using tax payers money, and the offices for Kadhis would be recognized rightly as religious offices, and not government office. Most importantly, the draft constitution that will soon be presented to Kenyans for a referendum must include the important clause removed by the PSC: that all religions will be treated equally.

Peter Ondeng is a development economist & author of Africa’s Moment;Peter Waiyaki is an advocate of the High Court of Kenya

God of a Season!

Be the Change you Want

I Used to hear of winter, summer, autumn and spring and wonder what does that mean!! The Bible in Ecclesiastes 3 says that there is a season for everything!! My understanding was pinned to the seasons I used to experience of hot summer or even hotter or a rainy season where water destroys all crops, carries away houses and other buildings! A season of luck, where we had no money at all for subsistence use and the only we could get maybe is 50 shillings after a hard days labour in ones shamba or land/farm. Now am seeing different seasons here on calender! My emphasis here is not mere calender seasons!! Look Here Kenyans!!

This kind of live has not diminished in my home village, people are still depended on natural seasons to dictate there agricultural season, their planting time, weeding time and harvest time. Food is still scarce, no better mechanisms for food storage and creation of a food reserve that can maintain peoples livelihoods during the famine seasons!! And worse still is when the little maize is kept in the grain reserve and sold by hungry politicians who wish only to satisfy their hunger and live millions of people suffering of hunger! A season of abundance of rain that washes away bridges, houses leaving people homeless and in makeshift camps, dwelling as Internally Displaced Persons in their own countries!!

We have a breed of leaders who think 'its their turn to eat', They only focus on the next election so that they remain in power for as long as they can as they enrich themselves through corruption and bribery!! You cannot hear the cry of the poor nor of the widows, the ophars and the street kids!! God is hearing their cry!! Your season of eating is coming to and end!! 220 people earning 400m per month yet there are over 10million un employed people!!!!!! Does it matter to you?

Its a time young men and young women, need to rise to the occasion and tell the leaders that long are gone the days when we used to be told we are the leaders of tommorow!! Because our today politicians have ensured that that tommorow never comes by so that we can also lead!!!

Until when shall we continue to see bloodshed on our streets because of ethnic violence and clensing just because our politician thinks the other tribe who are our friends are our enemies!! Until when shall we continue to languish in poeverty, living below a dollar a day yet these guys have their lunch worth of 100 dollars!! Until when shall we continue seeing ourselves languishing in the make shift camps for lack of a home yet the big guys have acres of lands equivalent of a whole province without any inhabitant!! Are they any better than us!!

This is not a wake up call to fight with any dagger or sword. But we can reclaim our season through our participation in deceision making proceses like the on going discussions on the draft constitution, lets build consensus!! Make a constitution that will be people friendly and that will serve us equally regardless of our status or position in the society for we are all equally before God and He is our God!!

Its our season!! Wake up guys!!

You can get the boy out of the village but not the village out of him

Be the Change you Want

Has anyone ever told you this statement? Well for me, I have been told a couple of times and sometimes just reminded that am still behaving the same way I used to behave in my village even though am in Europe!!! Its true! Some times there are very unique things that I would do in the village that I never thought at my age I would do them, well may be for fun!
When we went skiing sometime this month I remembered the act of tree climbing, and fire lighting that I used to do in the village. I wish I could upload the photos, but I would do that soon.

Home away from Home during Christmas

Be the Change you Want to see in the World

It was quite an exciting thing to discover that we have been considered to be part of a family during the Christmas celebrations! One of the amazing things that happens here is that there are many traditions to be followed for Christmas. And this includes advent where they light four candles each every sunday for four sundays before Christmas. This is done almost in all homes and churches.

There are lots of cookies made during this time and one common one is the ginger cakes that are made by every one among other cookies. There are lots of other food stuffs eaten in various places depending on the location and what was the activity in th olden days. For example people on the East coast where we celebrated Christmas always eat 'ribbe' that is pork meat made in a very special way that the outer covering of the meat is made crispy!!, The Western Coast people eat pinnekjort which is lambs meat that is salted whereas the people at the North they eat lutte fisk- which is a kind of fish that was preserved in away that is funny because I did not get the exact explanations but its a funny one to eat and we did eat it since our host family's mum is from the North. In the South people eat Turkey or Pinnekjort or fish!

Our Host family was such a blessing to us! They welcomed us well and we had lots of fun with them. For Norwegians the biggest party is on 24th of December where they attend church at 3pm for 45 minutes. After which there is rice porridge. They hide a nut in the porridge so that one who finds it while taking it gets a present for that!! This time round I got the nut and was given a marspan pig chocolate for a present. Then we eat supper made of different Norwegian traditionsl food stuffs including ribbe, some kind of grapes.

Then after the dissert there is the singing Christmas carols as we dance around the Christmas tree! Then we open the gifts that were placed under the tree.

This was an experience of its own that The Norwegians really value family life and this is the time in the year that they all meet to exchange gifts and meet to socialize.

Birthday Away From Home

Be the Change you Want!

What seemed like it would never be finally was what I will leave to remember all the days of my life.
As it has always been a joke that I always remembered my day two days after, this was inevitable since there was some one planning a surprise for me.

In the house where I stay we have different apartments and we leave five of us, two men down stairs and three ladies up stairs, and among the ladies is Mesh my team mate. She is very good in organizing for surprises and that I knew so well after organizing one for Isaiah at Hald but I couldn't figure out how mine would be.

In the evening together with Vegard My house mate they decided to trick me to accompany Vegard to swim and come back at exactly 8pm. I do'nt like swimming not because of water but I have limited knowledge of how to do it. Vergad tried to train me for sometime and he went on to swim. I was getting surprised at His un usual way of accompanying me home even when time that we had paid for was not yet over! Any way we left and Mesh called to ask where we were and she was waiting at the door of our house. When we arrived at the gate she got out requesting to have my phone to call Else our contact person and therefore she took my phone and bag. Before I noticed, Mateus and welton the Brazillians were out of the door with buckets of water and a group of other friends who had come. I took to my heals but I couldn't go far before they got the water on Me!!

A group of friends who had done the partial washing and gave me a Norwegian chocolate!

I thought the suprise was over ubtil I went to her dining room and found many other friends waiting for me to come. It was quite interesting to learn that culture is very dynamic just as people are. It always depends on who sets the rules of the game and sometimes the rules keep changing depending on who is in control. The question is how adaptable are we to different cultures despite the changing environments and people sometimes? I discovered as we played the card game that I can easily adjust to the changes and play with different people dispite of the changing rules and procedures!!

Volleyball is quite interesting in Norway not because this is a new country for me but because it is played in sand!! We had a wonderful moment playing the HALD cup tournament today and am really grateful that our team 3 won and is awaiting the semis tomorrow!

Sometimes because of the nature of the sand the ball would drible past somebody and You have to pick it as you lose the points!!

And at other times being keen and quick action was needed!

Kaa keen sasa!!

You could serve well as you encourage others!!

Running was of the essence even though it is hard in sand!

Victory comes finally!

Welton thanks for scoring with me!!

Yes!! As earlier posted it was like all is fine and there is nothing of interest in terms of concern to wash him the Kenyan way in a foreign land. During the morning class Ashild the programs coodinator came to class and made to sing for him a happy birthday song that was quite good and made him lively especially after he wore his best Nigerian attire!!

During the break of the first lesson he went out and was busy as usual talking to many guys in a group outside the hall of meeting. Just before the classes began, Kristina brought him a cake the school had made for him and lo! as he was receiving Mesh emptied her bottle of drinking water on him!

Then the washing began of course vigourously from us who knew the game as the rest of the inetrnationals watched including the teacher!

This was fantastic! then came the cake! He cut and gave it to us!!

You can be sure the cake was too lovely to wait for it patiently!!

The story went on the whole day at some point he after he now changed to this new clothes he thought that the washing bussiness wa over! the schemers were still on it! At Lunch time we left to ICA the nearby shop to shop for a gift to give to him and luck enough we got some biscuits that were really lovely! But how then do we get him outside for another washing! Mesh the schemer and Ruth and Kalisha implementors. Ruth conered him to help remove the "piece"hair outside in an open place which he readly obliged! Mesh went to prepare a card for him as I mobilized other guys both internationals and staff to come for the wasing ceremony!! Then Mesh and I came to him!I never knew Mesh can be such a thinker! She gives him the card and pulls him from the crowd to tell him that Christine would like to talk to him later and he is excited to tell her the stroy when the Prem lashed the first basin of water and Stella, Merab and others including me couldnt wait for another chance!!

The guys had no escape route!!

The game was so exciting that we finally made it to wash him properly for his birthday!! He could only regret why he gave in to Ruth`s plan and planned to revenge on 18th of December during Ruth`s birthday and on 30th May next year During Meshs Birthday!!

We thank God for Isaiah`s birthday because it reminded us of those fond memories of campus life and life at home in Kenya. We can only be grateful for Gods grace and favor as we minister in this foreign land.

Today was Isaiahs birthday!! It looked like a joke and it was like impossible to wash him! The day began so well with morning class on understanding a society by Nine justik! this was a rather intersting class especially for us who are coming into a new culture not knowing what is our entry point. There is a need for us to understand the fabrics that hold together the Norwegian before engaging it fully since this is the starting point for our engagement lest the people block up for us!

Our informant had alreday alluded to us that where we are going the People are rather closed up and would rather be ashamed with their things than invite a stranger! The guys operate in groups and therefore reaching them one has to use the groups a times through individuals in the group who are responsive!! Veronicah from Bergen had mentioned to us that the place is experiencing revival!! That they are having interdenominational meetings to awaken the desire for all Christians to meet and pray together! They even have annual meetings for this interdenoms! Lord I pray that you will give us fabor in the eyes of the people and more so the guys organizing the revivals that we shall together do exploits for you! You know how much our desire is to rich out to this people in whatever little way it is! So help us God!

You see how such information sends you thinking!!!

I thank God for this opportunity to know Him and to make Him know to others. I pray that this shall be what I shall live to die for always. Growing in His knowledge through scripture reading and prayer is my desire this year.

Added responsibilities from Yesterday made me keep on asking God questions of what he is upto with me. but am grateful for His assurance of that He shall nopt leave me alone nor let me stamble at any point!!!!!

It is always a joy to serve the Lord in whatever capacity and to allow him to lead you! I choose to Humble to His leading and to serve his purposes for my life.

Come and ma make my heart Your home

Come and be everything Iam and all I know

Search me through and through

Till my hjeart beciomes a home for you!*2

A home for you*2

Let everything I do open up a door for you

to come through

and my heart will be a place where you wannabe

This is my cry to my maker this year as I yearn to live for Him!!

I will obey

We fall down
We lay our crowns
At the feet of Jesus
The greatness of your mercy and and love
At the feet of Jesus

We cry holy holy holy holy
and we cry holy holy holy*2
is the Lord

This is my desire that I would fall down at tyhe Feet of Jesus and lay my crowns there ready to be taught and instructed at His feet. His mercies are so great to me and am grateful. I felt this song so heavily on my lips this morning as I reflected on the words of Jesus in Mathew 3 and 4 where He was calling the first disciples who were fishermen to become fishers of men. This is so amazing that the Lord choses us when we least expect Him to and leads us in His paths of righteousness with a mandate of fishing men into His kingdom.

After class time at Hald we had such a good meeting with Mesh, Isaiah and Ruth where we were reflecting on our current status after 6days of staying in Norway. such a great discovery that guys have already connected to their purpose in Norway and ministry is ongoing. The fact that I had been asked to share in the praise and prayer mad grately excited and moreso after I talked with my grandpa stepmum and dad i felt like oh fuks!!!
There came the sharing Oh my God I almost went overboard! You know! Telling the guys who are always cool and calm halleluya! Praise tha Lord!! But I was grateful to God that after the sermon many were blessed and some came to let me know that their calling in life was affirmed and they are feeling convicted to go on. This included John and Veronica from Bergen.
Lord I feel honored that you could do such a great work through me.

Receive All glory and praise!

Blåtur

This was a fantastic day!We have just arrived from a blåtur trip they call it! This is a trip us the students at HALD were expected to attend. The trip was intended to give us a moment of reflection and a feeling of a missionary that doesnt know exactly what is next. So in order to accomplish this we gave out all our electronic gadgets and were to totally depend on what our teachers were telling us in terms of what next to do. We did not know what time it was neither were aware of what we were to do next we heavily dependd on them and the bell to wake up and the meals.

The first day was such a funny one that you would almost feel like I should go back. After arrival at Fjellitun which is a camping site buld by the Norwegian Church Society for missioners we went to the hostel after which their was a game involving teams that we were to cooperate with each other to cross a river using small blocks of wood holding each other without stepping in the water. Our team consisted of Kenyans, Nepalis and Brazillians on FOKUS programme. We severally had to begin afresh because we one of us stepped in the water. This was a great lesson of team work that when one fails we all fail and its a collective responsibility for us to achive anything, obedience to the leader was tatamount. Oh there was the going back to the rooms and waiting for the fire alarm bells. This was a sign of following instructions. After the alarm we went outside to be counting then had our dinner- dinner in Norway is served early in the day as a hot meal. After which we were entertained in various ways by other students until sometime in the night when we went sleep. We did not know the time because we were not supposed to.

The following day in the morning i walk up to take a `passport` shower because we had been told not to take a shower because if we did there would be no water left for cooking food. that helped me be prepared for my QT and wait for the bell to avoid any hustes coming with it. Yesterday there were oter among us who went to swim in the lake and had no trouble in bathing today. I dont know how to swim so I couldnt give it a damn try. Breakfsat as usual bread. but for the first time we to pack our lunch the Norwegian style atleast a few sandwiches tat could take me for eight hours. Then the trip to the mountain began. It was to start with a solemn vow to do your best, support one another and to be positive. This was inportant because the trip was going to adventurous to some people and quite hard to other and yes it was.We were in the same group as yesterday. The journey took approximately two hours am not sure because I did not have a watch. During the journey we took turns in leading each other along the way. There was a specified path we were to follow the group in front acting as a guide to the one behind and helping each other along the way. I remembered the Brazillian lady Eirick who was shaking all over when it came to jumping over seemingly simple stones even going down a steep thing was hard coz she was very tensed. We took turns with Mateus our leader in helping her until we went though the whole trip. We had worn our rain jackets and pants because it was raining most of the time during the journey. Any way we arrived safely.

On arrival we took the trust fall. This reminded me alot about the Daystar visit we had sometimes in the cause of our STEM year when we went to visit Mesh. It was such an experience where we had trust our friends to hold us as we fall on them At deo one was to climb as high as he`/ she thinks can trust people to hold him/her. I remembered trusting guys very first and them letting me down by allowing me to fall down? This time round I dint try because I just dint want. Not because I dint trust guys but I just dint want. So mesh and Isiais did it, We took photos and our lunch and began the way back. On our way back we had blind games where we blinded and led each other along the path. This taught me alot. That sometimes God leads us to paths we dont know by holding our hands and other times he just allows us to walk on our own blindly as He instructs us on what to do. It is during this time that we need to totally depend on His leading and instruction! Ruth was feeling unwell by the time we were coming back and it was kind of all of us (the four of us from kenya) felt it. Thank God she was well after sometime.

On arrival I freshened up and we had dinner and entertainment. We presented a song by Reuben Kigame Oyee sifa Zote and danced twist. There were various presentations that were really funny! Then there was a bornfire! Roasting bread! I dint participate in it because ihad a chat with three Norwegian girls going for practice in Boulivia, Nepal and Kenya. To me this was an opportunity of ministry as the girls really inquired about life in a slum, poverty and un employment levels in Africa. i took the example of Abraham being commanded to leave Ur to a promised land. I encouraged the girls to take the period of practice as a missionary experience and allow God to lead them in whatever little ways or big waays He would. But also to be open minsded to the leading of the Lord. This was an awesome talk.

the following day in the morning it was really had to wake up because of the tiredness and fatique of Yesterday. But I thank God Prem walk us up at what time I know not. Breakfast and packed lunch. Then cleaning of our rooms and departure.

On arrival we got some hot meals and it was fantastic! i thought after checking my mails I could relax in the room doing some eading but I discovered it later that I hadnot read because I walk up with the book in my hand at 1930hrs when bread had been served and people were busy with their own business. I finally got three slices and some juice for the night. This is was fantastic day!

The little walk and talk we had with Mesh today is continously dimystifying lots of uncertainities I had had alot about her. I am grateful that the Lord is giving grace to talk about issues and allowing us to minister together. Lord I feel like Joshua in Zecharia 3. I promise to follow you wherever you may lead and to obey your commands and statutes. I know you will give me a place in the hearts of the Norwegians for ministry.

Blatur

We left HALD, in Mandal city of Norway on Friday to a tour called Blatur this means a trip in the blues. Never give up your right to be wrong, because then you will lose the ability to learn newthings and move forward with your life. Remember that fear always lurks behind perfectionism. Confronting your fears and allowing yourself the right to be human can, paradoxically, make yourself a happier and more productive person."-- Dr. David M. Burns
the strength of a man is not measured in terms of how perfect he is but in the ability to admit that I am also wrong, I do make mistakes, and am a normal person like any other. This draws many people to identify with you and helps you to win them over to yourself.

Look at what Christ used to do, He would go to Zacheus who thought to himself "this must be a holier than thou man, with this kind of cogregation following him, I cant approach him", Or maybe He thought that if His debtors see him near Jesus they will stone him to death, and therefore the only way to see this man is to climb on a tree. Even in such situations Jesus was able to identify with him and call him down, When they went to His house He humly ate with them who were declared unclean by the pharisees and saducees. Yet at the end of the day he won the heart of Zacheus over to Himself.

Look hear kenyans there are numerous Zacheus' around us wanting to see us and win our sympathy but we are too crowded to notice them. What crowds us?Is it the money we have? The jobs we have? The car, or what is it that makes you not to see the IDPS cry in Eldoret Mr. MP? You are not even afraid to divert the water used by the pooor peasants in Ukambani to your flower farm? Surely life has become too egocentric an idea that we oly see our troubles and we haver nothing to do with the cry of other people. We drive in huge cars that are gazzlers at the expence of the tax payers coin, or cent. Some of the tax payers are taxed until they cant educate their own children or feed them. Yet you do not even want your huge salaries to be taxed! What a glatonious people in the name of leaders we do have!! "you are less important."
For other children, their dominant memories of dad sadly included anger, violence, abuse, or addictions that kept him in bondage and feared by his children.

If you're a dad, instead of leaving behind memories of absence or perhaps even abuse, you truly have the potential to leave an amazingly positive legacy to your children instead:

"Dad, Your impact on my life was outstanding... Thank You!"

Has any one amongst us experienced the brutaliyty of a father, or on he contary the love of a father? In our daily news we hear of cases of such brutality as rape battaring and other cruel injustices done to childtren by their fathers. Did your fathers ever do that to you? Are you out to revenge?

Be the Change you want to see in the World: 46th Madaraka Day presidential speech

Be the Change you want to see in the World: 46th Madaraka Day presidential speech

46th Madaraka Day presidential speech

SPEECH BY HIS EXCELLENCY HON MWAI KIBAKI, CGH., M.P., PRESIDENT AND COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF OF THE ARMED FORCES OF THE REPUBLIC OF KENYA ON THE OCCASION OF THE 46TH MADARAKA DAY CELEBRATIONS, NYAYO STADIUM, 1ST JUNE, 2009

Fellow Kenyans,
I am very pleased to salute you on this auspicious occasion of our 46th Madaraka Day. This is an important moment when we remember the day Kenyans gained the status of internal self rule and management of the affairs of our country.

It is a day when we regained our dignity as a people free from nearly a century of colonial rule. The vision of our founding fathers was to create a just, united, prosperous and peaceful country; free of disease, ignorance and poverty. On this occasion, we reflect on the progress we have made in attaining that vision.

Fellow Kenyans,
We mark Madaraka Day at a time when there is need to be more strategic in our decision making due to the nature of the challenges we face. Globally, the financial crisis has slowed down the performance of economies across the world. Indeed, the growth of the world economy has dropped from 3.7 per cent in 2007 to 2.7 per cent last year.

Here at home, several external and internal factors have slowed down our economic growth from 7.1 per cent in 2007 to 1.7 per cent last year. These included post-election violence, high energy and food prices and adverse weather conditions. The consequence of this was reduced agricultural production and slump in earnings from tourism.

It is expected that the financial crisis will continue to negatively affect our economy through reduced demand for commodities we produce and a reduction in investment capital flows, official development assistance and diaspora remittances.

As we all appreciate, the economic slowdown we are experiencing has negative implications on the living standards of our people and especially on our efforts towards poverty reduction and employment creation. In spite of these indications, however, the prospects for our economy are not as bleak. Indeed, some sectors of the economy, particularly the manufacturing, building and construction have performed well.

Moreover, with sound macro-economic policies, as well as the reduction in the cost of fuel, agricultural inputs and other interventions by Government, our economy is projected to grow by between two and three per cent this year.

Though a modest growth rate, the projected improvement indicates the resilience of our economy in spite of enormous odds. Indeed, I am optimistic that we will soon have our economy back on the path of growth. But we must show our individual and collective commitment to growth at the family, community and national level. It is, therefore, incumbent upon every Kenyan to embrace hard work, remain determined and consistent.

Fellow Kenyans,
The key challenge we are facing, therefore, is the implementation of policies that will enable our economy to regain the growth momentum that we had achieved over the last few years. In this connection, my Government is focusing on fast-tracking the implementation of the first phase of VISION TWENTY THIRTY. In so doing, we will give priority to projects and programmes that are critical to the quick recovery of the economy.

Furthermore, we are making strategic interventions in all sectors with a view to addressing the issues of employment creation as well as elimination of absolute poverty. We will also continue to place emphasis on infrastructure development as well as increasing investments in the social sectors. These will widen economic opportunities for our people, especially the youth. In particular, my Government is implementing systematic measures aimed at ensuring our youth are gainfully employed. In this regard, we launched the Kazi Kwa Vijana Programme.

I am glad to note that most ministries have rolled out their Kazi Kwa Vijana Programmes countrywide and many of our young people have started benefiting from projects that are already underway.

So far treasury has already disbursed 3.4 billion Shillings to various line ministries for this financial year. An additional 6.6 billion shillings will be allocated in the coming financial year. We expect to generate 300,000 jobs from the programmes in the initial six months.

The Office of the Prime Minister has already formed a committee to harmonize, monitor and evaluate the efficiency of programmes. The Committee will also coordinate and oversee efficient use of funds under the Kazi Kwa Vijana programmes.

In addition to the Kazi Kwa Vijana, we have also taken steps to strengthen the Youth Enterprise Development Fund. I am glad to note that the fund has so far financed over 65,000 youth enterprises across the country to the tune of 2.3 billion shillings and created 200,000 new jobs. The aim is to increase the core funding to 5 billion shillings in Government funds over the next three years.

I wish to applaud the private sector, especially the banks that have also leveraged the Youth Fund with an additional 2 billion shillings. I thank them for showing confidence in the Fund and wish to salute the Kenyan youth who have shown that they can run successful enterprises. We have the duty to inspire the youth to embrace hardwork, patience, consistency and a sense of purpose.

Besides the youth, we have also stepped up measures to provide financial support to women. Towards this end, we have launched the Women Enterprise Fund to serve as a source of subsidized credit for business start-up and expansion.

I am glad to note that out of 1.2 billion shillings currently set aside for the Fund a total of 682 million shillings has been disbursed in loans to 92,000 women across the country. We will allocate another 500 million shillings for the Fund to bring the total available for women to 1.7 billion shillings.

I wish to make a special appeal to our youth and women to take advantage of the above efforts by Government and establish productive enterprises for their own benefit and the good of our nation.

In doing so, the youth and women will be well advised to adopt improved technology and join in the manufacturing of consumer products for the domestic and regional markets. Let our youth and women enter the modern textile sector for example, by making the numerous clothing products our people need for day to day use. I challenge you to come forward and engage in value addition of agro products and other goods that Kenyans and other people in the region use. The Market is wide and unlimited. Take advantage now.

Fellow Kenyans,
Beyond these efforts, my Government is implementing a number of multi-billion dollar infrastructure projects that will facilitate the creation of hundreds of thousands of jobs and stimulate numerous economic activities in all parts of our country. These projects include Special Economic Zones, starting with Athi River and Dongo Kundu in Mombasa, the construction of Lamu Port and Sudan-Ethiopia Transport Corridor and the new Standard-Gauge Railway line between Mombasa and Kampala.

Ground-breaking for most of these projects is expected to take place later this year and over the next two years. These new highways, railways, ports, power stations, oil and water pipelines, tourist resort cities, airports as well as business and technology parks will altogether create thousands of jobs and give a big boost to our economic growth. Indeed, I am happy to note that next week I will be officially launching the first undersea fibre-optic cable in Mombasa.

Fellow Kenyans,
Besides employment creation, there is urgent need for us to implement measures aimed at boosting agricultural production, particularly in the aspects related to food security in the country.

As we are all aware, our country received less than adequate rains this season. To end our vulnerability due to weather changes with regard to food security, the Government is implementing measures aimed at reducing our country’s over-reliance on rain-fed agriculture.

In the coming financial year, and over the next years, the Government will invest heavily in rehabilitating existing large-scale irrigation schemes such as Kano, Ahero, Mwea, Hola and Bura, Perkerra, Wei Wei and TARDA. We will also develop new schemes. These will include Kibwezi and Yatta irrigation schemes, the Lower Meru scheme, the Malindi and Tana Belt irrigation schemes, and Kimira Oluch in Rachounyo and Homa Bay, among others.

We have also begun the process of building a number of mega-dams in various parts of the country. These include Badasa Dam in Marsabit, Chemusu multi-purpose dam in Baringo, Umma Dam in Kitui, Kiserian Dam, River Nzoia Dam and Upper Ewaso Nyiro Dam. This will help us in the storage of water for irrigation and domestic consumption.

The Ministries of Water and Irrigation, Agriculture and Lands have been instructed to prepare a comprehensive irrigation development master-plan to ensure our country is less dependent on rain-fed agriculture.

However, as an immediate measure the government is determined to expand agricultural production by making fertilizer available to farmers at an affordable prize. The Government, together with related Government agencies, has imported fertilizer worth 9.7 billion shillings. This level of intervention by Government is unprecedented and shows our commitment to empowering the Kenyan farmer.

In the meantime, and due to the anticipated reduction in crop production, there will be need to have enough food stocks for emergency supplies to our people. Most of this food will have to be imported. I, therefore, direct the Ministry of Finance to extend the tax-free concessions for imported maize until the end of this year so that the private sector can continue to import affordable food.

For the most vulnerable individuals and communities facing famine, the Government will continue to mobilize resources to provide emergency feeding programmes for households. We will also support the school feeding programme in the hardship areas.

The Government will continue working with local and international non-governmental organizations and ensure that sufficient quantities of food are supplied. We will also improve on the distribution system so that food supplies can be extended to every point of the country.

I also wish to thank all individual and corporate citizens who have come to the aid of those in need of food. Your help has been in the true spirit of a working and caring nation.

The Government will remain sensitive and caring about all Kenyans, especially the underprivileged. We can only move the country forward when we reach out to each other and open up opportunities for the majority of our people.

Fellow Kenyans,
Following the post-election events of early last year, concerns have been raised that we have not made progress fast enough in the implementation of reforms.

However, I wish to assure Kenyans that since the signing and entrenchment of the National Accord in the Constitution and the establishment of the Grand Coalition Government, we have made significant strides in the past one year. These include:

1) Establishment of the Kriegler Commission and the subsequent implementation of its recommendations.

2) Establishment of the Waki Commission last July and several attempts to establish a local tribunal which will put an end to impunity. In this regard, consultations on various ways and options of implementing the report are still ongoing.

3) The Electoral Commission of Kenya was dissolved paving the way for electoral reforms, including the establishment of the Independent Interim Electoral Commission of Kenya and the establishment of the Interim Boundary Review Commission.

4) Legislation establishing the Truth, Justice and Reconciliation Commission has been passed by Parliament.

5) Commissioners in the National Ethnic Cohesion and Integration Commission are set to begin work.

6) Establishment of the Police Reforms Task Force to drive the process of transforming our Police Force into a police service.

7) Establishment of the Committee of Experts on the Constitutional Review to spearhead finalization of the review process.

These developments have paved the way for wide ranging political and social economic reforms. What is often not appreciated is that policy and legal initiatives take time to implement. They have to be agreed on by stakeholders while others require to be legislated by Parliament or require a comprehensive review of the Constitution.

By now, Kenyans are agreed that the most important reform we have to undertake as quickly as possible relates to the Constitution review. Now that we have the Committee of Experts in place, it is essential to move ahead without further excuses.

The Committee should now steer the review process in a non-partisan way and give Kenyans a draft that provides an appropriate, new framework of the Kenyan state. A constitution that ensures national cohesion, participation, inclusion and ownership. It would be best if the constitution will adequately serve present and future generations and withstand the test of time.

I am, therefore, appealing to the political parties and all Kenyans to desist from taking rigid and partisan positions so that we can get a new constitution within the next few months.

Fellow Kenyans,
Another aspect of major reforms my Government is undertaking concerns the judicial system. It has been said that justice delayed is justice denied. Therefore, there is urgent need to reduce the backlog of cases in our judicial system and deal with the issue of thousands of Kenyans who are unnecessarily held in remand for long periods of time. An efficient judicial system is a key pillar in our efforts to enhance security and human dignity, and security in our society.

To do this, funding for the judicial system, that is the Judiciary, State Law Office, the Police Service, and the Prisons Department will be substantially increased. Our objective is to have a sufficient number of judges and magistrates required to dispense with cases in a prompt and just manner.

More importantly, we must have sufficient numbers of investigating officers stationed throughout the country. No doubt, other aspects of reform in the judicial system will be implemented once recommendations of the relevant task forces are received.

One of the problems that the Government has been trying to deal with in the last six years is corruption. My Government established the Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission in an effort to deal with this social ill. There are hundreds of cases of corruption that are either in court or pending prosecution once investigations are complete.

I urge the Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission and the Attorney General as well as the Judiciary to move with speed and conclusively deal with these and other cases of corruption.

Fellow Kenyans,
A number of concerns have been raised over the state of the Grand Coalition. I wish to note that historically, coalitions face challenges whose solutions largely depend on the amount of patience, trust, confidence and focus on the common good. Our Grand Coalition is not different, though unique in several respects. Therefore, occasional disagreements should not be construed to mean that the country or Government is in a crisis.

I wish to assure Kenyans and our friends that the Prime Minister and I are determined to ensure that the Grand Coalition functions harmoniously. We are fully committed to faster and sustainable development, peace, unity and stability. These are the major pillars upon which the Kenyan people seek to build their nation. They define our freedom and democracy, the very foundation on which modernization and transformation will take place. Let us guard them jealously.

Fellow Kenyans,
I am saddened by the continued loss of jobs we are experiencing, particularly, with regard to formal jobs in the private sector. While we understand the difficult economic times we face locally and internationally, I want to appeal to all employers to be more innovative in overcoming the difficult times. I am directing the Ministries of Labour and Finance to consult with the Federation of Kenya Employers and Central Organization of Trade Unions on this matter.

There must be alternatives to laying off workers. We should be innovative and apply methods that will protect jobs.

The Government will also be conducting a national census beginning on the night of August 24th this year. I call upon all Kenyans to fully participate in this exercise that will provide critical information on the population for our development and planning purposes.

Turning to security in our country, I am concerned about the threats posed by organized criminal gangs, militias, commercial cattle rustling gangs and vigilante forces. If we are to create a modern society, we must decisively deal with these groups. This is the reason why our security forces are under strict instructions to deal firmly and swiftly with those who threaten the lives and property of our people.

Fellow Kenyans
The total effect of our development efforts will be rendered more effective when Kenya works within regional and international co-operation frameworks. Kenya will continue to work for full East African Integration. We shall also seek to strengthen free close trade within COMESA and the rest of Africa.

It is important at an occasion like this to point out that Kenya has the will and the capacity to protect her territorial integrity and the welfare of her people. But we must not be a nation of war-mongers but a land of people who cherish peace as an end in itself.

We seek to live in peace with all our neighbours. Nevertheless, we shall resist threats to our freedom and peace, and our security agencies have been detailed to deal firmly with threats from any quarters.

Finally, I want to assure you that while there are challenges that we face in our efforts to develop our nationhood, we must never be distracted in our path to becoming a just, democratic, working, caring and stable society. We must always have the will, focus and discipline to make the hard decisions needed to move us forward as a united country.

On this day when we are reminded of how we assumed responsibility for our own affairs 46 years ago, let us rededicate ourselves to assuming personal responsibility for national healing and reconciliation.

This great and beautiful land of Kenya belongs to us all. It has room for all; it binds us together as one people and one nation. Let us all - men and women, young and old, join hands together and live as one people, one nation and one Kenya.

7 Principles of an Eagle

PRINCIPLE 1
Eagles fly alone at high altitude and not with sparrows or other small birds.
No other bird can go to the height of the eagle.
Stay away from sparrows and ravens.
Eagles fly with Eagles

PRINCIPLE 2
Eagles have strong vision.
They have the ability to focus on something up to five kilometers away.
When an eagle sites his prey, he narrows his focus on it and set out to get it.
No matter the obstacles, the eagle will not move his focus from the prey until he grabs it.
Have a vision and remain focused no matter what the obstacle and you will succeed.

PRINCIPLE 3
Eagles do not eat dead things.
They feed only on fresh prey.
Vultures eat dead animals, but eagles will not.
Be careful with what you feed your eyes and ears with, especially in movies and on TV.
Steer clear of outdated and old information...
Always do your research well.

PRINCIPLE 4
Eagles love the storm.
When clouds gather, the eagles get excited.
The eagle uses the storm’s wind to lift itself higher.
Once it finds the wind of the storm, the eagles uses the raging storm to lift him above the clouds. This gives the eagle an opportunity to glide and rest its wings.
In the meantime, all the other birds hide in the leaves and branches of the trees.
We can use the storms of life to rise to greater heights.
Achievers relish challenges and use them profitably.

PRINCIPLE 5
The Eagle tests before it trusts.
When a female eagle meets a male and they want to mate, she flies down to earth with the male pursuing her and she picks a twig. She flies back into the air with the male pursuing her. Once she has reached a height high enough for her, she lets the twig fall to the ground and watches it as it falls. The male chases after the twig. The faster it falls, the faster he chases it. He has to catch it before it falls to the ground. He then brings it back to the female eagle. The female eagle grabs the twig and flies to a higher altitude and then drops the twig for the male to chase. This goes on for hours, with the height increasing until the female eagle is assured that the male eagle has mastered the art of catching the twig which shows commitment. Then and only then, will she allow him to mate with her. Whether in private life or in business, one should test commitment of people intended for partnership.

PRINCIPLE 6
The Eagle Prepares for Changes: When ready to lay eggs, the female and male eagle identify a place very high on a cliff where no predators can reach. The male flies to earth and picks thorns and lays them on the crevice of the cliff, then flies to earth again to collect twigs which he lays in the intended nest. He flies back to earth and picks thorns laying them on top of the twigs. He flies back to earth and picks soft grass to cover the thorns. When this first layering is complete the male eagle runs back to earth and picks more thorns, lays them on the nest; runs back to get grass it on top of the thorns, then plucks his feathers to complete the nest. The thorns on the outside of the nest protect it from possible intruders. Both male and female eagles participate in raising the eagle family. She lays the eggs and protects them; he builds the nest and hunts. During the time of training the young ones to fly, the mother eagle throws the eaglets out of the nest. Because they are scared, they jump into the nest again. Next, she throws them out and then takes off the soft layers of the nest, leaving the thorns bare. When the scared eaglets again jump into the nest, they are pricked by thorns. Shrieking and bleeding they jump out again this time wondering why the mother and father who love them so much are torturing them. Next, mother eagle pushes them off the cliff into the air. As they shriek in fear, father eagle flies out and catches them up on his back before they fall and brings them back to the cliff. This goes on for sometime until they start flapping their wings. They get excited at this newfound knowledge that they can fly. The preparation of the nest teaches us to prepare for changes; the preparation for the family teaches us that active participation of both partners leads to success; the pricking by the thorns tells us that sometimes being too comfortable where we are may result in us not experiencing life, not progressing and not learning at all. The thorns of life come to teach us that we need to grow, get out of the nest and live on. We may not know it but the seemingly comfortable and safe haven may have thorns. The people who love us do not let us languish in sloth but push us hard to grow and prosper. Even in their seemingly bad actions they have good intentions for us.

PRINCIPLE 7
The Eagle Knows when to Retire: When an Eagle grows old, his feathers become weak and cannot take him as fast as he should. When he feels weak and about to die, he retires to a place far away in the rocks. While there, he plucks out every feather on his body until he is completely bare. He stays in this hiding place until he has grown new feathers, then he can come out. We occasionally need to shed off old habits & vain items that ensnare us rather than adding value our lives. May God bless us all as He renew and refreshes our lives for the individual and collective challenges of life ahead.

The depth of corruption in Kenya is a wonder and a surprise to many as our leaders continually e arrange themselves to 'eat' living the common man more desperate and hungrier! Its a wonder and a Shame... how can there be a discrepancy of 10.8b shillings in a suplemantary budget that is seen as a typing error? The MPs continue amassing wealth to themselves, determine how mauch they can earn at the expense of the tax payer, refuse to pass legislation that can help mwananchi to fight poverty but continue to want to be in power.
In there campaign promises they have continually promised 24 hour economy, gone ahead to build malls with seven day shopping, twenty four hour service, beauty parlour, cinema, ATM banking, internet access and a branch of the cafe chain, the venue of choice for the city's late drinking, Black Berry wielding, Laptop addicted young professionals.
I ask are there really enough 'aspirational' people in Kenya, to keep this malls busy? Or, to put it slightly differently, weren't there thrusting entrepreneurs in danger of forgetting that the most genuinely 'aspirational' segment of Kenyan society was not in fact its small middle class, but millions of exasperated inhabitants of Korogocho, Dandora, Mathare and Kibera? And what would happen when those Kenyans finally registered that while a tiny elite was 'eating' as never before, their own, more modest aspirations were doomed to go forever ignored?
WE CAN DO SOMW THING FOR ALL PEOPLE TO ENJOY LIFE!!
